SUGARCANE ETHANOL AND PETRO-ETHANOL
What is Ethanol ?
Ethanol is alcohol and is also known as ETOH, grain alcohol, drinking alcohol and ethyl alcohol. It is identified by the formula C2H6O and can also be written as CH3−CH2−OH or C2H5OH
Ethanol is a volatile, colorless and flammable liquid and is used in a multitude of applications across many industries, such as, manufacturing, medical, laboratory, cosmetic and pharmaceutical
How is ethanol produced ?
Ethanol can be naturally produced (Bioethanol) by the fermentation of sugars, yeasts, starches and cellulose or can be produced via a petrochemical processes using coal.
Coal or crude-oil based ethanol’s are also commonly referred to as petro-ethanol’s or synthetic ethanol’s
We make use of both sugarcane ethanol, some industries also refer to it as “Everclear” and petro-ethanol (synthetic ethanol) We cater for each clients needs and requirements
ETHANOL SA (PTY) LTD.
We source our ethanol from the biggest refineries in South Africa and develop our product range using Pure ethanol.
Our rebate (licensed) site ensure that we follow all regulation regarding working with undenatured ethanol and we follow strict controls to ensure product stability and quality.
Natural ethanol e.g sugarcane alcohol and petro-ethanol (synthetic coal based alcohol) are chemically identical
Synthetic coal based ethanol is chemically identical to bio-ethanol (e.g sugarcane / cane sugar ethanol (alcohol). They are both the same compound C2H5OH.
The only difference is that bio-ethanol is made from the fermentation of carbohydrate derived sugars, followed by distillation
whereas synthetic alcohol is produced through a thermo-chemical process which begins with the creation of syngas from the gasification of a wide range of resources, e.g. coal, biomass (Plant and animal material).
Industries using ethanol
Ethanol is used for various applications across a multitude of industries.
Industries making using use of ethanol

Ethanol products and applications
Ethanol (alcohol) is virtually used in almost every product you can think of due to its solvent versatility properties. Below a list of just a few ethanol products and applications
Alcohol beverage manufacturing
Fragrances / Perfumes
Wood stains and varnishes
Ethanol comes in various grades and strengths
Ethanol 96% – also referred to as ENA (Extra Neutral Ethanol) or rectified ethanol
Ethanol 99.9% – also referred to as anhydrous ethanol or absolute ethanol
Denatured ethanol versus undenatured ethanol
All alcohol produced, whether naturally or synthetically is deemed “undenatured” (undenatured ethanol) The term implies that the alcohol is deemed untainted and drinkable.
Because alcohol is a regulated product, one requires a license to work with or use “undenatured alcohol”, typical applications for undenatured alcohol is the use of making alcohol beverages.
Denaturing ethanol (denatured ethanol) allows suppliers and manufactures to sell the ethanol product duty free, denaturing also renders the alcohol non-drinkable and therefore no rebate licenses are required to purchase the product.
What is Perfumers alcohol
Alcohol, an excellent solvent, has been used for centuries in the formulation of perfumes and fragrances. Alcohol allows for the dispersion and mixing of oil and water formulations.
Pure ethanol can easily be used to make a perfume. Using just ethanol provides you with a basic formulation.
We have developed a range of products, each with its own unique set of compounds to enhance your perfume and perfume making experience. Carefully crafted, we ensure that each base provides its own unique set of characteristics to bring out the best qualities of your perfume / fragrance.
Perfumers alcohol, perfume solvent, perfume base are all terms describing a particular crafted alcohol based used for perfumery
